“Three more degrees of global temperature cause us to lose 9 points of GDP worldwide. It is as if every year we have to bear the costs of a new pandemic »warns Guido Maria Brera. «The G20 of Draghi? A great success, it was fundamental to have made everyone understand that the path to follow is that of multilateralism, because a country alone cannot solve these problems. Whoever controls the words controls things and now, thanks to the premier, we are entering a new era ».
Brera, manager and writer, together with rapper J-Ax as a guest, has just created 4 podcasts that can be downloaded for free on all platforms to try to stir consciences. Is titled Metallaria, and this already says a lot, it already smells of heavy, unbreathable air. «Mine is a desperate cry – he explains -. We need to decide on climate and pollution, and we need to do it quickly ».
The Po Valley, Milan and other large cities, pollution and fine dust, why start from here?
«The gesture we do, several times a day, is to breathe; and the air today is something that hurts everyone, especially the weakest. In an evolved country, the damage that polluted air does are incalculable damage in terms of human lives. It is in the Po Valley that you can breathe the most contaminated air in Europe and here are eleven of the twenty most polluted European cities. And if we look at Milan, for example, according to the magazine Lancet We have about 3,900 premature deaths per year due to fine particles, which is as if six Boeing 747s fall into the city every year. But if six Boeing aircraft per year really crash on Milan, I think we would have a front page problem every day ».
And instead?
«Since the theme is invisible, the tendency is to underestimate it. But it is a huge issue, with repercussions also in social terms, from families who have to move because their children can’t stay in Milan because they can’t breathe, and economic ones. Starting with all the costs that affect public health, all the more so now that post Covid is so burdened. I am speaking of the whole Padania but also of the main Italian cities, it is obvious that in the Po Valley the problem is gigantic ».
Yet climate, pollution, ecological transition are now well present in the agendas of governments.
“Ours is a desperate scream. In the podcasts we talk about lives lived, then we listen to experts who correlate the severity of Covid with the level of dust and pollution in the cities, we speak with pediatricians and with experts in cardiovascular and cancer diseases. All this because enough light has never been shed on the invisible and silent massacre that causes pollution, especially in a basin like Padania ».
How do you assess the G20 conclusions on climate?
“Draghi did his best. We have succeeded in making it clear that the policy to be adopted on the climate is that of multilateralism and that everyone must do their part. It is very important that this concept has passed: it is fundamental, it is a great achievement of our premier ».
Could it be a good assist for Cop26?
“Starting from the Rome agreement, it is now a question of building a solution that looks ahead, certainly one could not expect to solve all the problems posed by the G20 with the climat change. But it is understood that we are on the hour or never and the ball now passes to Glasgow ».
What do you expect from this UN conference, will we be able to make progress? It doesn’t seem easy.
“I believe that until we become aware of what is happening, until they explain the consequences of what is happening, not only on public health but also on social and economic health, we will certainly not find fertile ground for courageous choices”.
Therefore?
“Generational consciences need to be changed. This is why I made podcasts, to help stir consciences. We must not ask ourselves whether or not COP 26 will be able to reach an agreement on the climate, because it must succeed. However, if we return to Padania, we are creating the problem of pollution for ourselves, we do not import it as a toxic cloud from abroad, and we can very well try to solve it ».
There is a lot of discussion about nuclear power, the clean one, of the fourth generation. Do you think it can facilitate the ecological transition?
«Yes, but the most important thing in my opinion are all the technologies capture carbon, the fossil will not be able to be eliminated in the short term and a great deal can be done by capturing the CO2 emitted and storing it, partially reconverting pieces of the economy ».
The ecological transition will cost Italy 650 billion over the next 30 years. Businesses are very worried.
«The transition must be made gradually and inertia. It is evident, however, that the positive externalities, which have always been silenced in the last twenty years, are not calculated in these costs, and I am referring to both the positive and negative ones. There is talk of the costs of the ecological transition but there is no mention of the costs of status quo, those we are paying today for the pollution level and those produced by the climate change. I would also like to see those in the calculation and I never see them. The costs of the climat change they are very high, which is why we need to act quickly and act well starting with investments, and in this field the environment and businesses must converge ».
However we are talking about a commitment that is equivalent to two maneuvers-Dragons a year for 10 years.
“It is a high cost, of course, but it is a cost that we all have to pay in order not to pay an infinitely higher cost.”
