Juan Guaidó, leader of the Venezuelan opposition and recognized as president of Venezuela by more than 50 countries, spoke after the election of Gustavo Petro as the new president of Colombia for the period 2022-2026.

Venezuela and Colombia are sister countries with the same roots
“We advocate that the management of the new President @petrogustavo maintain the protection of vulnerable Venezuelans in his country and accompany Venezuela’s struggle to recover its democracy,” he wrote.
And he added: “Venezuela and Colombia are sister countries with the same roots and historical struggles.”
Guaidó also took the opportunity to send a message to President Iván Duque and affirmed that during his mandate the relations between both countries were close despite the adversity.
“Venezuelans will always appreciate the support of President @ivanduque to migrants and the fight for democracy,” he concluded.
Colombia has decided its future in free and fair elections, which is what we aspire to and what we fight tirelessly for in Venezuela.
We congratulate Colombians and recognize the solidity of their democratic institutions, fundamental for justice and peace.

Guaidó’s reaction was expected by public opinion. It should be remembered that among the proposals of the elected president is the reestablishment of relations with Venezuela, an idea rejected by Juan Guaidó.
A few days before the second round, Guaidó had stated that restoring relations meant recognizing Nicolás Maduro.
“This would be recognizing Maduro and ignoring his links with the FARC and the ELN,” he said a few days ago.

After learning of Petro’s victory, the Venezuelan authorities reacted quickly and expressed their intention to recover their relations with the Colombian government.
“The Bolivarian Government of Venezuela expresses the strongest will to work on the construction of a renewed stage of comprehensive relations for the common good of the nation that we share, protected by two sovereign republics,” Maduro’s government said in a statement.
