Ferrari returns to win the 1000km of Paul Ricard, the second seasonal event of the Endurance Cup of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS, which ended in the dark after 6 very tense hours that gave Maranello the double win in extremis.
Even in the second half of the race the emotions and the twists were wasted, including a Full Course Yellow / Safety Car 16 ‘from the end for the exit of the Mercedes # 57 of Winward Racing which was on the podium in the Gold Cup.
This grouped all the cars, but Antonio Fuoco, Daniel Serra and Davide Rigon were perfect with the 488 # 71 of the Iron Lynx, recovering the lead at the fourth hour without ever giving up.
Rigon’s decisive extension would have allowed a calm finish, also because a bit of everything happened behind the standard-bearers of Maranello, with various problems for Mercedes and Lamborghini.
The AMG # 88 of Akkodis-ASP received two time penalties for infractions committed in the stops, but Marciello / Gounon / Juncadella had still recovered the place of honor about 60 ‘from the end, when on the Huracan # 63 of Emil Frey Racing has collapsed the rear left (yet another problem accused by one of the protagonists in action).
Bortolotti / Aitken / Costa could therefore be satisfied with the third step of the podium, but when the tire went off, Costa tried to quickly reach the pits and damaged the rear of the car, breaking the left headlight.
The Race Direction then forced Bortolotti to stop to repair it, but not having returned within the established terms, the very sad black flag initially arrived to exclude the Toro’s car, then withdrawn since the repair was carried out by the team, which however finds himself sixth.
With the neutralization of the final SC came the golden opportunity for the other Ferrari of the Iron Lynx, the 488 # 51 of Calado / Molina / Nielsen, also in a spin and then in the pits – miraculously without crashing – for a slow puncture in the fourth hour.
Molina made the most of being in Gounon’s wake to overtake him at the restart when there were about 4 rounds to go, then keeping behind the Frenchman and giving the Prancing Horse a 1-2.
A very close fight was instead staged for the rest of the Top5, which eventually ranks the BMW M4 # 50 of Rowe Racing (Harper / Hesse / Verhagen) in fourth place, which prevailed after a rustic Audi # duel. 46 by Valentino Rossi, Nico Müller and Frédéric Vervisch.
The ‘Doctor’ tried to resist as best he could in his double stint, the Swiss was literally irresistible in the comeback from 17th place, while the Belgian got the final part in the dark and with the dubs to be made that ultimately give the Team trio WRT the best result of the season.
With seventh place overall, the # 777 Mercedes of Al Manar Racing by HRT (Al Zubair / Jefferies / Schiller) took home the win in the Silver Cup, followed by the rival # 87 of Akkodis-ASP (Drouet / Stevenson / Moscow ), leading up to the fourth hour.
Behind them, in the ninth overall, are the winners of the Gold Class, Schandorff / Iribe / Millroy, at the wheel of the McLaren # 7 of Inception Racing, with the Top10 completed by the Audi # 66 of Winkelhock / Marschall / Puhakka (Attempto Racing ).
Next we have three other PRO cars, namely the BMW # 98 by Rowe Racing (Yelloly / Farfus / Catsburg), the Audi # 12 by Tresor by Car Collection (Drudi / Ghiotto / Haase) and the Aston Martin # 95 by Beechdean AMR. (Thiim / Martin / Sorensen).
The podium of the Silver Cup is completed by Menchaca / Proctor / Hutchison with the Audi # 31 of Team WRT, mocking the # 30 of teammates Neubauer / Simmenauer / Goethe.
In the Gold Cup the Ferrari # 83 of the Iron Dames Bovy / Frey / Gatting finishes second, the Audi # 33 of the WRT Team, entrusted to Tomita / A.Robin / M.Robin, also on the podium.
In the PRO-AM Class, a resounding epilogue in the final that sees the Mercedes # 20 of SPS Automotive Performance (Baumann / Pierburg / Konrad) overcoming with great mockery the McLaren # 188 of Garage 59 (West / Ramos / Chaves), which had dominated for a long time and wide despite a penalty in the fourth hour.
A Drive-Through inflicted on AF Corse Ferrari # 52 brings Bertolini / Machiels / Costantini down third, who were firmly in the place of honor, while still keeping behind the Porsche # 24 of Herberth Motorsport (Leutwiler / Picariello / Jacoma).
Great disappointment for Team WRT # 32 Audi, which Vanthoor / Weerts / Van Der Linde were unable to bring to the finish due to a problem with the rear light that forced them to the pits a couple of hours from the end.
Too bad also for the McLaren # 111 of JP Motorsport (Klien / Abril / Lind) which had distinguished itself in the first half of the race, before running into a problem that stopped it, as well as the Audi # 25 of Saintéloc Junior Team (Legeret / Mies / Niederhauser), in addition to the Lamborghini # 19 and # 14 of Emil Frey Racing.
