Yes, GroenLinks wants to ban pick-ups. They are unsafe and environmentally unfriendly.
Some problems you didn’t even know existed. Far too strict chamber presidents, football analysts with a candle fetish and the enduring conscience of Sebastian Vettel. Another thing of which the problem was not immediately apparent, but seems to exist, is the pickup. You know, one of those battleships that you can use as a company car on a gray license plate.
The municipal council of GroenLinks of Rotterdam finds the pick-ups a nuisance. According to them, these cars are particularly environmentally unfriendly. The biggest issue, however, is security. Or rather, the lack of it. That is why GroenLinks wants to ban the pick-ups.
OK, GroenLinks wants to ban something that should actually be a free choice. But do they have a point?
GroenLinks wants to ban pick-ups
According to them – of course – yes. They rely on American research. It emerged that the pick-ups are particularly unsafe. Not so much for the occupants, but for those who are hit. And that chance is huge, because in addition to the enormous dimensions, the blind spots in a pick-up are enormous, according to the research. Up to 13 children can gather in this blind spot.
According to GroenLinks councilor Marvin Biljoen, ‘more and more pick-ups and other large vehicles are driving and parking in the city centre’. It seems that everyone is affected by this: entrepreneurs, road users and residents. In particular, the huge pick-ups in residential areas with children playing are really no longer possible in 2022. Although, colleague @loek has his own view on this:
Such an Aries is so big that when a child lies flat on his back, he just rides over it without touching it.
Loek, always sees the positive in a situation.
Designation decision
That is why the democratically elected councilor advocates a so-called designation decision. With that, one can forbid it for a large pick-up to park. But GroenLinks is not only Left, they are also Green. They therefore also want to investigate to what extent the pick-ups affect the air quality.
It is not known what the increase in the number of pick-ups in the residential areas of Rotterdam is. Nor how many accidents have occurred. Or how many pick-ups drive across residential areas. GroenLinks does know that the pick-ups are seriously large and often take up two parking spaces. That is why at least the parking fee (paying 2x) must be increased.
Of course we do have images of a Rotterdammer in a pick-up:
