Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg was detained this Saturday (5) during a protest against fossil energy subsidies, in Brussels, Belgium.
According to AFP, Thunberg was taken by Belgian police after refusing to leave the scene of a mobilization. She has been arrested for civil disobedience in previous protests.
In this new protest, the activist was part of a group of protesters organized by the United for Climate Justice movement to ask the European Union (EU) to end fossil fuel subsidies.
In a letter addressed to EU leaders, the activists reported that the objective is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, but this goal “will not occur without an immediate elimination of fossil fuel subsidies”.
Activist Greta has already been sentenced three times in Sweden, most recently in May this year by the Stockholm Court with a fine for two counts of disobedience for taking part in protests in front of the country’s Parliament.
Her last arrest took place in June this year by Finnish authorities.
