Greenpeace he has not stopped following the events Volkswagen after the outbreak of Dieselgate, which had suddenly blown up the pollution problem in the motoring world after a few years of numbness. In fact, the environmental organization has once again moved its pawn on the chessboard e sued, through its German branch, to the Wolfsburg car manufacturer. The motivation? Volkswagen would not be doing its part in fighting climate change by not having reduced emissions sufficiently. In fact, Greenpeace asks “the abandonment of endothermic by 2030 and the reduction of emissions by up to 65% compared to 2018“.
Volkswagen has rejected the allegations and also the aforementioned industry councils, explaining that not only is its commitment remarkable, but that “it cannot solve climate change alone“. “Appropriate measures must be taken by governments, discussed by Parliament. Civil disputes through lawsuits brought against individual companies are not the way to do justice on these issues of great responsibility“. Words from a VW spokesperson reported by Automotive News and several news agencies.
The lawsuit brought by Greenpeace is inspired by a German judicial decision, dating back to May 2020, which basically illustrated Germany as a country unable to protect future generations from climate change; and a Dutch court decision regarding the oil company Shell, with the latter forced to reduce emissions, under court order, as it is held directly responsible for part of the process that led to climate change.
There is not only bad news, however, for Volkswagen: Swiss federal prosecutors will drop, as they say in judicial jargon, the Dieselgate charges, after five years of investigation. It seems that there is not enough evidence to continue to carry out the accusatory system, even if a time window will remain open to allow private individuals to collect new testimonies and possibly try to receive personal compensation. The prosecution’s thesis was based on the belief that Volkswagen executives were aware of the manipulation of emissions data relating to vehicles circulating in the Swiss Confederation.
