The European Commission has recognized the environmental potential of LPG, placing it among the alternative fuels. A move that comes at a time when the European body itself is preparing to set deadlines with certainty after which it will no longer be possible to sell new internal combustion vehicles, but it will be possible to proceed with electrification only. So what future will be destined for current fuels, such as LPG? In the world there are 28 million vehicles powered by liquefied petroleum gas, of which 2.7 million circulating in Italy. And their CO2 footprint it is lower than what many assume.
Today’s edition of Il Fatto Quotidiano, which takes into consideration the estimates of Assogasliquidi-federchimica, explains that when an engine works by burning LPG it immediately emits 21% less CO2 than when running on petrol, while on diesel the advantage is 2%. Not only that: the benefits extend to 60% less nitrogen oxides, and 70% less on diesel, while fine particles drop by more than 82%, with a peak of -92% compared to diesel. “Sustainability must be assessed along the entire supply chain, because the LPG industry is linked to a circular economic model – explains the association – Being a product associated with refining processes and natural gas extraction activities, its use in various uses represents in all respects a process of efficiency and reduction of emissions upstream of the value chain “.
The estimates put forward by the association are probably the same as those being examined by the European Commission, which, as mentioned initially, included LPG in the list of alternative fuels on which to base the process of energy transition and decarbonisation of the transport sector. The distribution network is widespread: at the moment there are 30,000 liquefied petroleum gas distributors in Europe, of which over 4,500 are in Italy, practically one in four service stations. As for costs, the difference in price between a liter of petrol and one of gas, despite the dizzying fluctuations of the last few weeks, is on average around one euro per liter.
