Wittenberg and the others wanted to explain to the judges that the indictment makes no sense, and also rattles on all sides. “It’s really messy work. For some suspects, the indictment only mentions a telephone number or a first name. And there are whole pieces of text missing”, fulminates Wittenberg. “In addition, the prosecutor has not put in what she suspects which suspect at what time. She has presented a sort of menu card, and the judges get to choose. Absurd, everyone is entitled to an individual assessment.” Then there is another suspect who has to come from Germany to stand trial in Lesbos, but is not allowed to enter the country by another judge. She would be a danger to public safety. “These judges did not want to listen to all these objections, because they do not consider themselves competent. And so we can explain the same thing to other judges here in a few months.”
The trial this morning was chaotic. Journalists were denied access just before the start, according to the court due to corona measures. Thereafter, the judges adjourned the case because no interpreters were present for the non-Greek accused. Finally, another counselor translated for Wittenberg. Also, the indictment was only available in Greek, while the accused are entitled to a version they can understand.
