The first banknotes with the effigy of King Charles III officially enter circulation in the United Kingdom from today, as announced by the Bank of England, although it will take some time to see them in wallets. The image of the sovereign is thus destined to gradually replace that of the late Queen Elizabeth on polymer notes in denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50 pounds. Those with Elizabeth II remain in circulation and are expected to be withdrawn only if they are damaged to minimize the environmental and financial impact, based on the indications that arrived from Buckingham Palace after the Queen’s death on 8 September 2022.
The new notes join coins featuring the image of Charles III, which entered circulation in December 2022. From today, through the Bank of England, citizens can also exchange their old notes for new ones, up to a limit of 300 pounds per person.
