Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg officially appointed his son Guillaume as his deputy on Tuesday, paving the way for the transfer of powers as head of state to him. As “deputy representative”, Grand Duke Guillaume, 42, Crown Prince of Luxembourg, will assume “certain responsibilities” while Grand Duke Henri, 69, will remain head of state, according to the Council of State and the Grand Ducal Court. No decision has yet been made on when Henry will abdicate the throne. Prince Guillaume is scheduled to take the constitutional oath before the House of Representatives, after signing the decree appointing the Grand Duchy in the palace. After the ceremony ends, citizens can greet the Grand Duke and his son in the square in front of Parliament and the Palace.
Grand Duke Henry of Luxembourg has become the president of the second smallest country in the European Union since October 7, 2000. He announced last June on the occasion of the National Day in Luxembourg that he would make his son his deputy. It is noteworthy that Henry himself became a “deputy representative” two and a half years before his father, Prince Jean, abdicated the throne.
Grand Duke Guillaume, heir to the throne of Luxembourg, is married to the Belgian Countess, Princess Stephanie. Luxembourg has a population of about 670,000 people.
