Granada has put an end to Robert Moreno’s stage on his bench. The Catalan coach, who was the Spanish national coach for 10 games, was dismissed in the early hours of this Saturday and after his team’s defeat against Valencia (3-1). “The club has decided this Saturday to disassociate itself from the first team coach. From Granada CF we want to thank Robert Moreno for his work and dedication during this period and we wish him all the luck in the future”.
This is how the Andalusian entity expressed itself to publicize the dismissal of its coach, who arrived at Granada last summer. The Andalusian team is immersed in a serious run of nine games without winning, with a very few three of the last 27 points. With these numbers, Granada is on the verge of relegation (three points) after having lost the cushion it had. Add only 25 points.
Granada issued another statement also at dawn in which it was specified that Rubén Torrecilla, coach of the subsidiary team, would eventually take over the bench. These decisions were made after a meeting of the club’s directors, with Patricia Rodríguez, general director, at the helm. The dismissal of the coach had the endorsement of the club’s property, a Chinese capital investment fund. The entity also launched a message of unity in the face of the complicated scenario it is experiencing.
“We totally believe in the work of Robert Moreno,” said Germán Sánchez, Granada’s captain, at the end of the match in Valencia. The footballer’s words have not been taken into account when assessing the decision made on Moreno, who did not want to refer to his possible dismissal after the defeat against Valencia. Even throughout the week, the technician had reported that internally the support was total for his work.
Moreno arrived at Granada with the complicated role of replacing Diego Martínez, the coach who took Granada from the Second Division to the quarterfinals of the Europa League, losing to Manchester United. The weight of that stage always planned in the trajectory of a team that reacted in December after a complicated start to the League and that has not known victory so far in 2022 (six defeats and three draws). Granada spent 10 million euros in the last winter market to try to make the team react. Young footballers arrived with a certain projection who, for the moment, have not been able to alleviate the club’s qualifying situation. These are the cases of Arezo, Uzuni, Petrovic, Raba and Álex Collado.
Granada is now looking for a coach to replace Robert Moreno and faces three decisive games in its fight for permanence. Next Saturday he faces Elche and then he will do so against Alavés and Rayo Vallecano before facing the regional derby against Sevilla.
