The victory achieved by Carlos Sainz in the British Grand Prix had pushed the Community of Madrid to believe in a concrete approach to the world of Formula 1. Before the Spaniard even got on the top step of the podium, the Iberian capital had in fact sent a letter to the President and CEO of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, to apply officially to host a GP in their region.
The request, sent about three weeks ago by the President of the Madrid Community, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, presented a project linked mainly to two concrete options, with the potential choice of one of these that could have joined the already present Spanish GP in Barcelona (renewed until 2026). On the one hand, there would have been the reintroduction of the circuit of Jarama, former seat of the Iberian GP between the 60s and 80s. Regarding the latter facility, however, there would be no full guarantee on the conditions necessary to be able to host F1 regularly. At the same time, the new circuit of Morata de Tajuña, still under study. As a third hypothesis, however, immediately indicated as the least feasible and desired, there would also be that of a city route.
In any case, almost three weeks after the submission of the application, neither Formula 1 nor Liberty Media have provided answers to the Madrid community, which nevertheless continues not to lose hope regarding a possible role as a new entry in the Circus. If the proposal were accepted, Spain would become the third country to host more than one scheduled event in its territory, just like Italy (Imola and Monza) and the United States (Miami and Austin, with the addition of Las Vegas from 2023).
