Denarium (RR), Caiado (GO), Camelli (AC) and Mendes (MT) were reelected; Rocha (RO) and Wilson (AM) seek reelection
Governors of 6 states made official this Thursday (6.Oct.2022) their support for the candidacy for reelection of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the 2nd round of the election. Of them, 4 were re-elected in the 1st round in their states for the next 4 years, and 2 will contest the 2nd round on October 30th.
Declared support for Bolsonaro: re-elected governors Antonio Denarium (PP-RR), Caiado (União-GO), Gladson Camelli (PP-AC) and Mauro Mendes (União-MT); and reelection candidates Coronel Marcos Rocha (União-RO) and Wilson (União-AM).
Once a critic of Bolsonaro, Caiado said this Thursday that, like him, Bolsonaro is a “man of democratic formation” and declared to expect the result of the presidential election “within the democratic game”.
“On behalf of the people of Goiás, I come here to bring and declare support for the reelection of Your Excellency”, said.
Caiado was re-elected governor of the State of Goiás with 51.81% of the valid votes and will govern the 12th largest electoral college in the country for another 4 years. Gustavo Mendanha (Patriota), a direct opponent during the entire campaign in the state, had 25.20% of the valid votes so far, or 879,031 votes. Caiado had 1,806,892 votes.
During his 1st term, Caiado had as a banner the fight against corruption, regional inequalities and the defense of civil servants’ rights. In Congress, he worked on issues related to agriculture and livestock.
His administration was marked by the break with President Bolsonaro publicly due to differences in positioning in relation to the management of the pandemic and the entry of Goiás into the Fiscal Recovery Regime.
After breaking with Bolsonaro, Caiado even publicly praised the president, but suffered criticism from the chief executive throughout his term. Bolsonaro called Caiado a “liar” when talking about fuel taxation.
support from deputies
In addition to the local chief executives, Bolsonaro received dozens of elected allied congressmen and alternates at Palácio da Alvorada this Thursday. The Speaker of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), also participated and said that the formation of the new National Congress was elected on October 2 for the continuity of the Bolsonaro government.
“On the last day 2, the choices that Brazil made left a very strong message for all Brazilians, with the trend of the direction that the population wants for the next 4 years: a center-right Congress, reformer, a Conservative Congress” , said.
Elected deputies who support the president went public to counter the criticism and said that the female electorate is on the side of the candidate for reelection.
Deputies Carla Zambelli (PL-SP), Sílvia Waiãpi (PL-AP) and elected senator Tereza Cristina (PP-MS) made favorable statements to Bolsonaro.
