Amount of public resources represents an increase of 30.6% compared to that applied last year
The federal government announced this Tuesday (6.Feb.2024) that it will invest R$4.7 billion in strategic highways and railways to transport the grain harvest in 2024. The amount represents an increase of 31% in relation to public resources allocated to these areas in 2023, when the Union invested R$3.6 billion.
These investments were divided into two large areas for the flow of Brazilian agribusiness production, the Arco Norte – North and Northeast regions – and the Arco Sul – South and Southeast regions. The states in the Central-West region are part of the 2 segments. The resources will be allocated as follows:
- Arco Norte: R$2.66 billion
- Arco Sul: R$2.05 billion
Among the projects detailed by the government are the paving of 5 federal highways and 60 structural works. In relation to railways, the government plans to intensify work on Fiol 2 (West-East Integration Railway), Transnordestina and Fico (Mid-West Integration Railway).
The Ministry of Transport wants to hold 10 auctions of road concessions directly related to agricultural production flow routes. The government's estimate is that these competitions will raise R$95 billion to improve these corridors. Read the list:

The Minister of Transport, Renan Filho, also reinforced the government's desire to optimize another 6 road concession contracts. According to the minister, 4 of these highways already have the optimization process advanced at the TCU (Federal Audit Court). The government's forecast is that these contractual readjustments will unlock R$48 billion for the following highways:
- MS Via
- Ecosul
- Conceive
- Transbrasiliana
- Coast
- Via Brazil
PORT TERMINALS
The Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, also detailed his department's investments to improve the harvest transport infrastructure through port terminals. The government is expected to carry out 16 new port leasing projects in 2024, which will generate around R$8 billion.
In relation to waterways, an important mode of grain transport, the ministry announced an investment of approximately R$639.4 million for this year. In addition, the government will also finalize the creation of the National Waterways Secretariat in February.
The Ministry of Ports and Airports will hold 5 port auctions in Arco Norte, which estimate a minimum investment in these structures of R$2 billion. In terms of regulation, the ministry promises the BR dos Rios project for November 2024, in addition to the opening of tenders for the concession of the Madeira, Lagoa-Mirim and Paraguay River waterways in the 4th quarter of this year, as well as the definition of the Barra Norte concession.
Costa Filho also drew attention to the need for Brazil to diversify its points of receipt of imported fertilizers. The minister stated that Brazil needs to increase its internal production of the input, but that it is equally necessary to improve the port infrastructure in the North and Northeast regions to receive the product.
According to data presented by the minister, 70.6% of fertilizer imports arrive through the South region and São Paulo. The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, also participated in the event.
