Brazil will need “more intense” dispatch of thermoelectric plants until December to meet “peak” times, when power load is at its peak and there is a considerable volume of solar generation leaving the system, the Sector Monitoring Committee said. Elétrico (CMSE) in a statement about the monthly meeting held on Wednesday.
Given this scenario, the CMSE recommended to the regulatory agency ANP the adoption of actions “in favor of the regular supply of natural gas” for energy generation in the National Interconnected System (SIN).
In recent months, the drought has worsened in Brazil, especially in the North, affecting the capacity of large hydroelectric plants to supply power to the electrical system. More thermoelectric plants began to be activated, which increased the cost for energy consumers with the activation of the most expensive tariff flags.
The National Electric System Operator (ONS) must also mobilize other resources to meet the peak load by the end of the year, such as importing energy from neighboring countries and easing operational rules, said the CMSE.
Regarding rainfall for the coming months, meteorological models indicate a gradual intensification of rainfall in the Southeast in the coming weeks, especially from the beginning of November.
According to the ONS, there has been an increase in the volume of rain in the Southeast in recent days, but still without impact on the hydroelectric reservoirs in the region.
For October, the expectation is that influent natural energy (ENA) will remain below the historical average in all subsystems in the country, and should reach, in the worst scenario outlined, the 2nd lowest value in a 94-year history.
“The storage level of the National Interconnected System (SIN) at the end of September was 49%, considered satisfactory for the end of the dry season in a large part of the national territory”, pointed out the CMSE.
