SAO PAULO (Reuters) – The federal government decided on Wednesday to maintain a series of measures to guarantee the supply of electricity to the South region, which has been suffering from more adverse conditions and low storage in the reservoirs of hydroelectric plants.
In a note, the Ministry of Mines and Energy said that the Electric Sector Monitoring Committee decided, in a meeting, for the continuity of actions for the South in force since last month, such as the maximization of energy exchange for the region, the activation of thermoelectric plants out of order of merit, prioritizing the lowest cost ones, and energy imports from neighboring countries.
The ministry also said that, according to the National Electric System Operator (ONS), the country has favorable conditions for electrical and energy services, due to the rains recorded earlier this year and policies to preserve the reservoirs.
As a result, storage in the National Interconnected System (SIN) has already reached a level higher than previous projections, reaching 63.6% on March 8.
For the next few days, the expectation is for a reduction in rainfall, with greater concentration of precipitation in the South, said the ministry.
