The governor general of the Solomon Islands announced this Friday (26) a nightly curfew in Honiara, the capital of the archipelago, after the third day of violent protests in the country.
“A daily curfew has been decreed in Honiara from 7:00 pm to 6:00 am, starting on November 26, indefinitely,” announced Governor General David Vunagi.
This Friday, thousands of protesters continued, for the third consecutive day, with looting and burning of buildings in Honiara.
Police used tear gas and fired warning shots to disperse a group of protesters who intended to head to Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare’s residence.
The Chinese community became the target of protests against the Sogavare government, which in 2019 changed Taiwan’s diplomatic recognition to Communist China.
