The federal government asked for more time to analyze the request of the Northeastern States against the cut in the payment of Bolsa Família to thousands of beneficiaries in the region. Northeastern governors complain of an alleged unequal treatment in the cancellation of aid and in receiving new registrations in relation to the States of the South and Southeast, the richest regions in the country.
Members of the Ministry of Citizenship, the portfolio responsible for managing the program, and the Attorney General’s Office (AGU), which defends the interests of the Planalto in court, met with representatives of the Northeastern States in a virtual custody hearing this Friday, 15, to try to reach an agreement, but there is still no definition. The Union asked for a period of five working days to present an opinion.
The meeting was scheduled by Minister Gilmar Mendes, rapporteur of the action brought by the governors in the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to try to overturn the cuts in Bolsa Família.
The States agree with the suspension of payment only for families that have irregularities in their registration, such as evidence of fraud, excessively high income and tenure in political positions, which covers a universe of 22 thousand people. The AGU, in turn, says that the federal government needs to prioritize assistance due to the increase in poverty in the wake of the crisis caused by the pandemic.
The governor of Piauí, Wellington Dias, who directs the Northeast Consortium, also participated in the meeting. He claims that the states agreed ‘in good faith’ to appear at the hearing and suggested the alternative of adjusting the budget proposal with Congress.
“We need to look at the people who have the right and don’t get the right. And, also, against a real discrimination against the Northeast”, he said after the meeting.
“Here was also the alternative so that, as in other previous situations, such as with the ICMS for export policy, where there was an agreement with the deadline given to the national executive, to the National Congress, which resulted in legislation that allowed the fulfillment of the understanding . Budget, in this case, for the poorest, I think there is good sensitivity from the National Congress and I expect from the Executive”, added the governor.
