The Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, announced that the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and meat manufacturers will organize a logistics network for the distribution of animal protein to Rio Grande do Sul, at the request of the Chief Executive. According to him, distribution to the population of Rio Grande do Sul will last as long as necessary.
The declaration took place this Monday, the 27th, after Lula’s meeting with the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries (ABIEC), the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) and the Brazilian Association of Meat Packers (Abrafrigo), accompanied by Fávaro. The meeting took place at Palácio do Planalto.
“This was not a meeting specifically to talk about the animal protein sector. There was no mention of the demands or needs of the sector. This was a meeting that the president asked me to do on Thursday so that I could call the representative activities of the class”, commented Fávaro. At the meeting, the businesspeople committed to donating more than 2 million kg of meat to logistics hubs, which should be equivalent to 6 million meals.
The logistics network for protein distribution, according to Fávaro, will be “permanent” in nature and will be organized by sectoral entities and the government. “We will build this network for as long as necessary to distribute quality protein,” he commented.
According to the minister, during the crisis in Rio Grande do Sul, there was a difficulty in getting proteins for the basic food basket to the State. Fávaro stated that 590 kitchen points providing food were identified in the State. The distribution, according to him, will be aligned with the government of Rio Grande do Sul and should also include solidarity kitchens.
Proteins, according to Fávaro, are already reaching the population of Rio Grande do Sul. “There’s already meat there today. What we are going to do from now on is quickly create this working group. The logistics hub is already there, meat is already available,” he said.
Approach with Agro
At the beginning of the year, Lula met with agricultural sectors at Granja do Torto as a way of getting closer to the category. According to Fávaro, such meetings with the head of the Executive were suspended in light of the tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul.
According to the minister, Lula was “so touched” by the sector’s help to the State that “he said he would call on other sectors of the economy to help in an organized way”. “We are realizing that it is not simple: I donated and it’s over.”
