Google Meet, Google's well-known video conferencing service, is introducing a new feature that will allow users to slightly improve their appearance before entering a meeting. After the initial launch of the feature for mobile devices last year, the novelty now also arrives on the Google Meet web application, making the experience more accessible to users who use the service from computers. The introduced function offers two types of filters: “thin” and “smoothing”. According to Google, the subtle filter applies a slight improvement to the complexion, lightens dark circles and makes the eyes brighter, while the smoothing filter slightly accentuates these effects, making them more noticeable.
Contrary to what can be found in other applications, such as Snapchat, the filters offered by Google Meet do not drastically change the appearance of users. From the images provided, it seems that the effects applied are quite subtle, almost imperceptible, leaving the impression that the user is not using any filters. These retouching options can easily be found and activated through Google Meet's settings by selecting “Visual Effects” and then “Appearance.” From here, you can turn portrait retouching on or off and choose your preferred filter.
The portrait retouch feature is starting to roll out today, but will only be available to users with a paid subscription, including Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise plans Plus, Education Plus and Teaching & Learning Upgrade. Google One and Google Workspace Individual subscribers will also have access to portrait enhancements. Although Google arrived a little late in the field of video conference filters, compared to competitors such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams which already allow you to change the appearance of users more markedly, this novelty could represent an addition appreciated by those looking for discreet solutions to present yourself at your best in video calls, without completely distorting your natural appearance.
