Goodyear announced the launch of the new tire ElectricDrive GT, designed specifically for the electric car market. Initially intended for the North American market only, it is the first to be developed for electric vehicles. This is an all-season with a tread pattern that should be ideal in relaxed and habitual driving conditions.
The ElectricDrive GT features Goodyear’s SoundComfort technology, which acts as an integrated sound barrier helping to reduce road noise. It is also designed with a tread pattern asymmetrical and a specific compound that provides traction suitable for all seasons. While Goodyear plans to expand its portfolio of similar products in 2022, the initial version of Goodyear ElectricDrive GT is available in size 255 / 45R19 104W XL. It is a measure that corresponds to the size of the tires used by the popular Tesla Model Y and Model 3. The market opening towards the most ‘loved’ electric cars in the United States is evident in this choice.
“Electric vehicles have a very specific set of requirements for load, torque, noise, range, rolling resistance and overall performance. We pride ourselves on providing cutting-edge technologies to serve the evolving electric vehicle landscape“Said David Reese, Goodyear’s vice president of product development.
It is not obvious to choose a tire for the electric car: thanks to the absence of engine noise, a wrong compound can be particularly annoying since there is no other sound able to cover that produced by rolling. Tire manufacturers need to take into account not only this aspect, but also the extra weight of electric sedans and SUVs, the effects on range and efficiency and grip in particular driving moments such as acceleration. The sector, as a whole, has been running for cover for some time and there are already several tires on the market that are advertised as specific for battery-powered cars.
