No, you’re not an old goat who is afraid of changes: physical buttons really work better than touchscreens, an extensive study has shown. Perhaps the investigation will be the last straw for Volkswagen boss Thomas Schäfer. He now shares the good news that the ‘real’ physical buttons are returning to the steering wheel of Volkswagen.
‘We are fine-tuning our portfolio and design. In doing so, we create a new simplicity in our cars. For example, we are bringing back the steering wheel with push buttons! That’s what VW’s customers want,” Schäfer wrote on LinkedIn. The buttons that you have to swipe over and that you often accidentally touch, seem to disappear.
Hopefully it doesn’t stop at the steering wheel
We hope the ‘new simplicity’ extends beyond the steering wheel. As far as we are concerned, some buttons may disappear from the touchscreen and return to the dashboard. And our opinion about the wiper panels that regulate the temperature in the car, that should also be clear by now. We don’t dare to say it out loud, because then we will have ID drivers all over us.
We are curious to see if more manufacturers follow suit. Mercedes, for example, has a double-decker steering wheel full of wiper panels, because in many cases lousy works.
