“It took 85 days and 18 hours, but today the scientific committee can say that the eruption is over,” regional security minister Julio Perez said at a news conference today.
The eruption of the volcano on the Canary Island started on September 19. It was the first eruption in fifty years. The lava destroyed about 2900 buildings and also pieces of agricultural land. Thousands of people have been evacuated. People were also regularly unable to leave their homes because of the toxic sulfur fumes that were released.
The damage from the eruption is estimated at almost 900 million euros. It is the longest eruption on the island since it started recording in 1500.
The volcano has been inactive for about two weeks, but the authorities wanted to wait until Christmas Day to confirm the end of the crisis on La Palma. Several sources, including the National Geographical Institute of Spain, previously said that the volcano was no longer emitting lava or sulfur dioxide. Since no volcanic activity has yet been measured, experts believe it is “unlikely” that the volcano would cause additional damage.
