Independent games often have the quality and courage to bring types of experiences to the gaming market peculiar, it’s almost exotic. Whether this is good or bad, this should be discussed on a case-by-case basis, but we can assure you that with Good Knight the Filipino developers of the team of the same name have created a product that, in order to be accepted on the whole, must at the same time be evaluated with all its enormous limitations and problems. A hellish title in both history and gameplay
Good Knight literally takes us to hell with the descent of a knight who after death finds himself in a place full of disturbing oxymorons. The same cannot be said of the story that has seemed to us so far cryptic and not very sketchy but still functional to the gameplay. As already mentioned, we are talking about a quite peculiar title, with the protagonist, or one of the few available, which must literally run around a small circumference in the center of the screen and dodge hundreds of bullets at the same time. Basically it is as if we find ourselves running in perpetuity on a deadly dance floor, where the focus of the gameplay will therefore be to position our alter-ego in the best possible way.
The levels and scenarios change according to the progression of the game world, but basically the only activities required of the player are those of dodge choosing the direction of travel around the circle and shooting enemies. In fact, the protagonist runs autonomously without the intervention of the player who will only have to focus on the direction in which to rotate the character, and which enemies to shoot. This limitation in the activities could suggest a certain simplicity in the game challenge, but this is only an illusion that is dispelled as soon as you take the pad in your hand. Good Knight it was in fact presented in this preliminary preview phase as a title tragically difficult and difficult due to the chaotic compositions of bullets that cover the screen with deadly jets that leave very little room for errors and that punish any positioning error in a manner instant. In fact, the product, which counts on an extremely short longevity in terms of content, focuses more on the very high difficulty that pushes players to try and retry a section even dozens and dozens of times.
To relieve the player’s seemingly hopeless situation, a mechanic is added time slowdown which extends – albeit in a narrow way – the margin of error otherwise almost zero. However, it is not possible to abuse this system which has a limited duration, a small recovery time and the need to be used only at the right time to avoid losing the rhythm and ending up in a trap. Good Knight it is in fact also a sort of punitive puzzle game, in which the positioning and timing to dodge a flurry of bullets are components that require method and a certain amount of problem solving. This is because it fits exactly into the “Angular momentum” correct can be no small feat. Fortunately, the checkpoints are very frequent and compensate extreme fragility of our hero who can be slaughtered with just 1 or 2 hits. For what concern shooting system, this showed itself how just sketched and although very useful, it is not absolutely intuitive. Therefore, if from a certain point of view the gameplay of the title can be fun and stimulating for hardcore players, on the other hand it can also be in the long run terribly repetitive, frustrating and not always well-kept. A piece of advice we can give you if you find yourself in trouble in the game, is to stand still and let the rider run in one direction until he is sure to die, so that he can memorize when to act, change towards and shoot.
Accessible but not very ambitious
One of the most important characteristics of Good Knight is certainly the auditory component, since we are still talking about a hybrid with a rhythmic game, and consequently the sound quality in this preview also has a certain value. From a certain point of view the musical assonances with BPM Bullet per Minute there are, although absolutely the same qualitative levels are not reached. Here comes a subjective component since the music listened to is of the rock genre with some hint of metal and indie, and on the whole it is pleasant even if in the long run quite repetitive, but obviously it is up to the user to verify how much it can really be to his liking.
The graphic component of the title is the daughter of a budget what to define very risky that’s an understatement at least at the current state of the build, and as a result we can’t expect much in that regard. However, the scalability of the production with a lot of “Potato mod”, i.e. graphics settings so low as to reduce the load on the oldest PCs to a minimum and thus be usable by as many people as possible. At the same time, however, it is also a way of almost voluntarily ruining the quality of the textures and in general of all the graphics that are already extremely low normally.
In fact, the title can be spun without any problem even on configurations of 6 or 7 years ago even with the graphics settings set on high, so obviously we do not recommend – if you have the possibility – the potato mod since it totally resets even the little good that the title shows from one point from an aesthetic and above all artistic point of view. Interesting precisely the artistic vision of Filipino developers, with the continuous oxymoron between the beauty of floral compositions fused with continuous visions of skulls, infernal flames, goats, folkloric demons, pentagons and monstrosities of the genre. Definitely a setting that, although it is at times static, still has good background potential.
The current version of Good Knight it is therefore a hybrid title with interesting basic ideas, which has a good graphic scalability and a challenging and complex gameplay. However, there are also numerous and very evident limits such as the level of challenge that is sometimes so high as to be frustrating, a very strong background repetitiveness, a very short campaign and a low level technical component. Furthermore, currently it has not been possible to test the online multiplayer of the title which therefore still remains an unknown. Ultimately, Good Kinight is a title to try only and only if you are ready to accept all its limits, perhaps attracted by the artistic sector, which in our view is of great charm.
