Opposition leader María Corina Machado said this Sunday (8) that Edmundo González Urrutia, former candidate of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) who contested and won – according to minutes recognized by the US that were published on the internet – dictator Nicolás Maduro in the July election, was at risk of death due to the persecution perpetrated against him by the Chavista regime.
In a post on social media, Machado denounced the escalation of threats and attacks against González, who requested political asylum in Spain, a country he traveled to this Saturday (7). According to Machado, the Maduro regime has “no scruples or limits” in its attempt to silence opponents.
“His life was in danger, and the increasing threats, subpoenas, arrest warrants and even attempts at blackmail and coercion to which he was subjected demonstrate that the regime has no scruples or limits in its obsession with silencing him and trying to bend him,” wrote Corina Machado, as quoted by the Venezuelan newspaper. The National.
González Urrutia left Venezuela this Saturday after facing a series of accusations from the Chavista regime, including “incitement to disobedience” and “conspiracy”. The accusations culminated in an arrest warrant against him, issued by the Chavista Justice, after the Public Ministry, controlled by Tarek Saab, an ally of Maduro, summoned the opponent three times to give testimony in the Chavista “investigation” against the minutes that were published by the PUD on the internet, which confirm the defeat of the dictator Maduro.
Machado called the actions of the Chavista regime “state terrorism.” She also stressed that the Maduro regime is increasingly “delegitimized.”
“This operation by the regime and its allies is further evidence of their criminal nature, which delegitimizes them and sinks them further and further. But, once again, they were wrong. Their attempted coup d’état against Popular Sovereignty will not materialize,” he said in X, as reported by the Venezuelan portal Cocuyo effect.
