Edmundo González Urrutia, an opponent who faced and defeated – according to the minutes released by the opposition platform and recognized by the US – dictator Nicolás Maduro in the July elections, gave his first statements this Sunday (8) after landing in Spain, where he took refuge after being the target of persecution by Chavismo.
González released an audio message on the messaging app WhatsApp, widely distributed by the opposition Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), stating that his departure from Venezuela was marked by “pressure, coercion and threats” that sought to prevent him from going to Spain. Despite the challenges faced, he expressed his confidence that the fight for freedom and the recovery of democracy in Venezuela will continue.
“I wanted to inform you that this morning I arrived in Madrid. My departure from Caracas was surrounded by episodes of pressure, coercion and threats not to allow my departure. I trust that soon we will continue the fight for freedom and the recovery of democracy in Venezuela. A big hug to everyone,” the opposition leader said in the audio. Earlier, opposition figure María Corina Machado said that González left Venezuela because his life was at risk in the country.
According to information from the Argentine portal Infobaethe opponent landed in Madrid on Sunday afternoon. He was on a Spanish Air Force aircraft, accompanied by his wife, who was also under threat from Chavismo, and the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Spain, Diego Martínez Belío.
González was received in Spain by Susana Sumelzo, Secretary of State for Iberian America and Spanish-speaking countries in the world, who stated that the European country has already initiated legal procedures to provide legal asylum to Maduro’s opponent.
