My gratitude to the former presidents of the Spanish democracy who promote an agreed solution to our sovereign claims over the Malvinas Islands. #Malvinas40años”, Fernández wrote on his official account on the social network Twitter.

The Argentine embassy in Spain reported this Friday in a statement on the creation of a support group for the dialogue between Argentina and the United Kingdom, which emerged after several meetings with the Argentine ambassador in Madrid, Ricardo Alfonsín. This group is made up of four former heads of the Spanish Government: the socialists Felipe González and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and the popular José María Aznar and Mariano Rajoy, along with other personalities from Spanish national and international politics.
“We reaffirm the need for the Governments of the Argentine Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to resume, as soon as possible, the negotiations aimed at finding a prompt solution to the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands, Georgias del Sur and Sándwich del Sur and the surrounding maritime spaces”, the members of the support group point out in a statement.
They also indicate that these negotiations must be carried out “within the framework of the resolutions of the United Nations, the Organization of American States and the provisions and objectives of the Charter of the United Nations, including the principle of territorial integrity.”
“In this sense, we highlight the successive resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly, which urge the Secretary General to carry out good offices efforts, in order to resume negotiations aimed at finding a solution as soon as possible. peacefully to the aforementioned dispute”, continues the declaration of the dialogue support group.

Argentina and the United Kingdom (whose occupation of the islands dates back to 1833) clashed in 1982 for the sovereignty of Malvinas in a war that began with the landing of Argentine troops in the archipelago and ended in June of that year with their surrender to the British forces. In the conflict 649 Argentines, 255 British and three islanders died.
Since then, the United Kingdom has refused to resume negotiations with Argentina, despite repeated calls for dialogue by the United Nations and other international forums.
