The move, which had been planned for weeks, was confirmed on Tuesday, when the LIV tour announced six player recruitments.
Smith, who won the European major competition The Open Championship in July, is believed to have received around 100 million dollars as a contract fee.
Australian Smith’s move to LIV is seen as a heavy loss of prestige for the American-led PGA Tour.
Over here almost all of the players who have moved to LIV have had difficulty admitting that the obvious reason for moving to play on a new tour is money, the opportunity to earn even with bad playing, more millions on top of the previous ones.
However, Smith made an exception and admitted to Golf Digest, that money was one reason.
“Money was definitely a factor, I won’t deny that. This was a business decision and an offer I couldn’t pass up,” said Smith.

However, according to Smith, the bigger reason for the decision was that now he has the opportunity to spend more time in Australia. Smith has lived in the United States since 2015.
Smith is the only one of the top 15 players in the world rankings who has moved to the LIV tour.
