Golf | European tour punishes those who played in the Saudi-funded tour with fines and bans

Those who have played on the LIV Golf Invitational will not be able to participate in the Scottish Open or US Barbasol and Barracuda tournaments in July.

Golf European tour said on Midsummer’s Eve on its website about the penalties it imposed on those who played on the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational tour.

The European tour fined players who responded to the Saudi call with a fine of £ 100,000, or around € 117,000, and a ban on three tournaments.

Those who have played on the Saudi tour will not be able to take part in the Scottish Open or US Barbasol and Barracuda tournaments in early July.

“Every action in life and in professional sport has consequences – especially if someone decides to break the rules, as has happened with many of our members now” CEO of the European Tour Keith Pelley said in a press release.

“Their actions are not fair to the vast majority of our members and undermine the tour, which is why we took the measures we announced.”

European tour use half of the fines to reward future tournaments for players who follow the rules. The other half goes to charity.

The European tour, sponsored by the Dubai-based logistics company DP World, follows the US PGA tour in its sanctions policy.

The PGA announced the penalties for those playing the LIV tour just minutes after the Saudi tour kicked off at the beginning of the month in Hemel Hempstead, north-west London.
