In a non-televised ceremony and without a long list of stars, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its nominations for the 79th edition. In the midst of the instability of the organization itself, due to the supposed boycott that filmmakers and studios prepare due to the unethical and diversity complaints, the president of the HFPA, Helen Hoehne, initiated the announcement through the YouTube channel.
“This has been a year of change and reflection for the HFPA. For the past eight months we have worked tirelessly as an organization to be better. We changed our rules, statutes, added a new code of conduct, and restructured our government. We also have 21 new members. The largest and most diverse in our 79-year history. They have not only provided a new perspective, but also ideas that will help us continue to evolve ”, Hoehne said.

And it is that the association had also received the rejection of actresses like Scarlett Johansson. “As an actress promoting a movie, you are expected to participate in awards season by attending press conferences and award shows. In the past, this often meant facing sexist questions and comments from certain HFPA members that bordered on sexual harassment. The HFPA is an organization that was legitimized by people like Harvey Weinstein. It’s time we took a step back, ”Johansson said in May.
In the midst of this controversy, the Foreign Press Association has nominated three of the most important women in the industry today: Jessica Chastain (for The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos), Also prominent as film and television producers, and Oscar and Emmy winner Olivia Colman (The Daughter). Also to Lady Gaga (The House of Gucci) and Kristen Stewart (for Spencer), known for their activism in favor of equality.
And while the future of the organization remains a question mark for the US media, the most nominated film was Netflix’s The Power of the Dog, alongside Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast. Both, who tie with seven nominations, will compete with Dune, Coda, King Richard and Belfast in the best picture category. The Power of the Dog, directed by Jane Campion, was also nominated for directing and in the supporting and leading roles.
