José Ignacio Goirigolzarri will present his resignation today as president of Caixabank. A voluntary resignation from his position that coincides in time with the pressure from the European Central Bank (ECB) for the presidencies of financial entities to stop being executive. This has been announced by ‘La Vanguardia’ and this newspaper has been able to confirm it through financial sources.
The director was due to be renewed at the next shareholders meeting but he will not wait for that moment and will present his resignation today at the board of directors held by the entity of Catalan origin. In this conclave, Caixabank is also expected to name a new president, although with different functions than the one Goirigolzarri had until now.
In this way, the until now president puts an end to a period of just under four years at Caixabank. It was Bankia’s last major representation in the entity and now, at 70 years old, he will leave the position. And it does so just a few weeks after the group presents its new strategic plan in which the bank’s direction for the coming years will be defined.
However, his resignation is voluntary, which coincides in time with the ECB’s almost demand that there be no executive presidencies in the banks. Caixabank would thus take a step to ‘adjust’ to the supervisor’s recommendations, so it would be expected that the new president would enter office without the executive functions that Goirigolzarri had.
Likewise, the ECB’s desire for presidencies to stop being executive not only challenged Caixabank, but there are two Spanish entities, the two largest, that still have presidents with these functions in their positions. They are Banco Santander and BBVA, through Ana Botín and Carlos Torres.
