Elielma Carvalho Braga, 37, underwent an alectomy, cosmetic surgery to thin her nose, in June 2020, at a dentist’s office, located in Aparecida de Goiânia (GO). However, the procedure did not have the expected result. She told G1 that part of her nose was necrotic and, therefore, she had a scar on her face, which shook her self-esteem.
“I’m ashamed, because we do something to improve a little and the person does it. He destroyed my self-esteem. I cry, what I live today is not easy,” she said.
To G1, Elielma stressed that she researched the surgical procedure before doing it. Through this, she saw on the networks that the dentist Igor Leonardo Soares Nascimento performed the alectomy and even publicized some successful results.
So she closed the package to get some cosmetic surgery done with the dentist. At first, Elielma believed that everything had gone well. However, the woman began to feel severe pain in her face and contacted Igor Leonardo to ask for guidance.
Elielma decided to return to the dentist’s office when the situation worsened. Afterwards, the two went to a health unit so that she could receive the necessary medical care.
“My face started to burn. The other day, it was full of blisters, as if it were a burn”, recalled the woman.
As she had no health insurance, Elielma had to go through several consultations in the public health network until she was able to find a plastic surgeon. Because of the severity of her case, she had to undergo 14 surgeries to insert a skin and fat graft and reconstruct one of her nostrils.
Currently, to be able to breathe, Elielma needs to use a reamer in both nostrils. In addition, she must undergo more surgical procedures to improve existing injuries.
“It’s so much needling that I even have trauma. In a (repair) surgery, I had to dilate my nose. There was no anesthesia and I screamed in pain.”
Because of the sequels on her face, Elielma wears a mask constantly. She also told G1 that she recently graduated in aesthetics, but dropped out of acting in the field. “Be afraid of doing something wrong and causing harm, just like I suffered,” she vented.
Case against the dentist
After all the mishaps she went through, Elielma decided to file a lawsuit against the dentist Igor Leonardo Soares Nascimento. In the action, she asks for R$ 12 thousand for moral, material and aesthetic damages.
When questioned by G1, the dentist’s defense reported that there was no malpractice or recklessness on the part of the professional during the surgery.
Dentist Igor stated that “it was not the alectomy that caused the problem”, but rather the Nicolau Syndrome that Elielma developed. Because it’s a rare condition, it can be “characterized by tissue necrosis that occurs after drug injection,” the dentist said.
“I was very sensitive to her problem. I paid for the medications and subsequent treatments with other colleagues. I have never left her financially helpless and have closely followed her post-mortem treatment. Unfortunately, we, professionals in the area, are subject to complications that are not our will”, added Igor.
However, it is worth mentioning that aesthetic surgical procedures must be performed by physicians. The Federal Council of Dentistry allows dentists to perform face surgeries, but prohibits the performance of alectomy.
