AThere is a video of a young woman on Twitter. She says her name is Miriam and she wants to explain why she is about to go to Berlin Airport and let balloons rise to disrupt air traffic. Why she will do this even though there is a war in Ukraine. She speaks of the fear of what is happening in Ukraine and that she has known this feeling for a long time, that it accompanies her every day: as fear of how global warming will change life on the planet. Her voice almost breaks, she is close to tears when she says that she doesn’t understand how one can suppress what will happen now that people have drowned in the Ahr valley.
What the young woman feels has also found its way into the new report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). For the first time, a major status report addresses the fact that the consequences of global warming are having an impact on the human psyche. The mental state is negatively influenced by experiencing extreme weather events, for example, but also by the expectation of what events could still occur. It can be assumed that anxiety and stress will increase, especially in children and adolescents.
