NRecently, Giulia Gwinn offered something she herself had never been offered. She organized soccer training for girls in Meckenbeuren, a small community in the Lake Constance district. She also played with girls there and talked to mums who were standing on a sports field for the first time. She gave autographs to the girls and replies to the moms. And so, with personal contact, she was able to tackle a problem for which she had to use far more cunning at the time. Because the story of Giulia Gwinn, the girl from Lake Constance who has become the face of German soccer women, begins with a little lie.
It’s Monday in Herzogenaurach, where Gwinn, 22, is preparing for the European Championships in England with the national team. Sitting in a meeting room with exercise balls, she explains why she lied to her parents when she was eight. Back then, she was constantly playing with her brothers on the soccer field, but that didn’t change the fact that her mother didn’t want her to go to training sessions with TSG Ailingen, the soccer club in her home town.
