“I don’t wish for any kind of revenge or preferential treatment.I am sure that the judges will decide for the best. I have full faith in the institutions, the sentence that the judges will decide will be the right one”. This is what Gino Cecchettin, Giulia’s father, says during a break in the trial – before the Assize Court of Venice – which sees his ex-boyfriend Filippo Turetta accused of murder.
“Being here renews my pain – adds Cecchettin – today I am certainly not well and there is not a day that I do not think of my Giulia. Today being here is an act of duty and respect towards the court, then I will decide from time to time. I hope it’s a fair trial.”.
“I am not afraid of a confrontation with Turetta, why should I? The damage – he recalls – has already been done. It is his choice to be or not to be in the courtroom, it is not up to me to judge. I would have nothing to say to Filippo Turetta”, he concludes.
Claimed damages of 1 million
In the application to join the civil action, Gino Cecchettin, represented by the lawyer Stefano Tigani, indicated the amount of approximately one million euros as the request for damages. The judges of the Assize Court of Venice admitted only Giulia Cecchettin’s family members (her father Gino, her brothers Elena and Davide, her uncle Alessio and her grandmother Carla Gatto) as civil parties. The action of all the others was rejected: four national associations against gender violence, Penelope (an organization that deals with missing persons) and the Municipalities of Fossó and Vigonovo, where the twenty-two-year-old student was killed and lived. The court did not find direct damage with respect to the murder of the young woman at the hands of her ex-boyfriend Filippo Turetta.
