“We could have won 8 races, Red Bull was more efficient than us”. The Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto taking stock of the first half of 2022 in which F1 took to the track on 13 occasions, he underlined that the Scuderia di Maranello could easily have doubled the flags that currently stand out at the entrance of the Gestione Sportiva. There are four banners relating to the successes of Charles Leclerc in Bahrain, Australia and Austria to which is added the victory of Carlos Sainz in Great Britain.
Ferrari won on Red Bull’s home tracks, but overall the Milton Keynes team has already scored nine wins this season, eight with Max Verstappen and one with Sergio Perez. The Dutch driver has 80 points of advantage against Charles Leclerc while in the Constructors’ standings there are 97 points to recover for Ferrari on Red Bull, with Mercedes gradually taking advantage of the constant performance and stumbling blocks of the F1-75 to reach 30 points from the team led on the track and in the factory by Mattia Binotto.
Over the weekend, F1 will finally be back on track in Belgium at Spa Francorchamps, the first stage of a hat-trick that also includes Zandvoort and Monza without interruption. Reopening the world championship speech will not be easy also because in Belgium Charles Leclerc is expected from a penalty on the starting grid. The fact that this is due to the introduction of the new updated hybrid system – the definitive freezing of the power units as regards the electrical components will start on September 1st – however, leaves open well-founded hopes of a comeback in the race for the Monegasque driver.
Antonio Giovinazzi, third Ferrari driver and decisive factor in the work on the simulator, underlines that the dream of the world championship in Ferrari is still lulled by the men from Maranello: “The spirit of the Italians has always been that of not giving up – the words of the driver born in 1993 interviewed by The Corriere dello Sport – last year Ferrari was fighting for the top-10 while now it is the fastest car in the championship. There are certainly many points to recover, but we know we have the best package and the best car. We will therefore try until the end ”.
