“I think I have an old face,” says actor Giovanni Arce, laughing as he recounted the latest historical figures who have accompanied him.
We currently see him on Netflix as Paco Robles in ‘The Last Bastion’, on Sunday he put himself in the shoes of Mariano melgar in ‘The other liberators’ (Latina) and has just returned to the theater with Guayaquil: a love story, which relives the meeting between the liberators San Martín and Bolívar, giving life to an aide-de-camp.

Convinced that it is the characters who choose the actors, Arce points out that his career has a large number of historical figures. “For TV Peru for the bicentennial we did something, also for Michel Gómez the series ‘Goleadores’, which recreated the glorious feat that the Peruvian team did in the Berlin Olympics in 1936. I have always participated in period productions and I love it” .
About Mariano Melgar, one of the episodes that includes the production that Latina broadcasts on Sundays, said that the construction of the Arequipa revolutionary was based on his history, his experiences and, naturally, his artistic side.
“Obviously it was the part with which I most identified, the artistic side of Mariano, the poetry. In addition, it was interesting to connect with his facet of revolutionary, recreate the battles, his patriotic spirit was quite interesting and quite a challenge I really liked facing it ”, he says.

Curiously, for Arce it is the second time that he plays the famous Arequipa, whom he points out could be his relative. “Six years ago I played Mariano for a documentary by TV Peru and it was there that I found out that we are descendants of him. According to my father, we are family because my grandfather from Arequipa is called Arce Melgar. He wrote poems, just like me. And I think knowing all that gave me a special sense when it came to putting myself in his boots. As the actors say, the characters choose us ”.
Reynaldo Arenas was very harsh and criticized the edition of ‘The other liberators’ saying that “they threw a hard work overboard.” What do you think?
I heard something, I read that I had not seen some scenes, but I could not say more because I was not in the recording of the chapter to which it refers. I don’t know what scenes Reynaldo is referring to. Only he will know; Besides, I didn’t have the same script as him either.
