The leader of the Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, Giorgia Meloni, said the right-wing coalition that won the Italian general elections this Sunday (25) will govern to unite the country.
This was Meloni’s first public statement after his party, one of three that make up the right-wing coalition, won the most votes in the election. With that, she should become the first woman to rule Italy.
In a speech at a hotel on the outskirts of Rome in the early hours of Monday (26), Meloni avoided triumphalist tones and assured that the coalition also made up of Matteo Salvini’s League and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia will govern ” so that Italians can be proud of being Italians”.
According to the partial results, the FdI was the most voted party, with about 26%, and the coalition obtained 43%, against 26% of the progressive bloc led by the Democratic Party (PD).
“Italians have given a clear nomination from the polls, and the nomination is for a center-right government under the guidance of the Brothers of Italy,” Meloni said. She also stated that it is “time for Italians to have a government again that comes out of a nomination at the polls”.
Meloni lamented that the election campaign was “aggressive and violent” and stressed that “Italy and the European Union need everyone’s contribution to the complex situation in which we find ourselves”.
She was also unhappy with the abstention rate in the election – 36% – and declared her objective to “rebuild the relationship between the State and the citizens”.
