“We were very saddened to learn of his passing last night. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.”Markus told Efe.
In April 2020, Markus had denounced that Rodríguez-Orejuela was an elderly person “with several chronic diseases” who was at risk of dying at the beginning of the pandemic.
Meetings with Maradona
The links with football were known. He was linked to him with links to América de Cali and several players of the time dedicated their performances to him.
In 1978, Maradona spoke with Barcelona, but the Spanish club did not have good money to hire him. A year later, the crack came to Cali to dispute a Cup of the Government of the Valley, in which America, Cali, Cúcuta and Argentinos Juniors played.
Maradona was a figure. They say that he scored two goals against America and then four against the cast of Norte de Santanderr. The brothers Miguel and Gilberto Rodríguez were interested in the Argentine.
The player returned to Colombia in 1980, played a match with Pereira, which won 4-3, but the visitors’ goals were noted by the ‘Pelusa’.
America also played in that tournament, as did Cali. The scarlet played the final with Pereira. The Rodríguez Orejuelas invited Maradona to speak. It is said that Diego received from the hands of the American DT of the time, Gabriel Ochos Uribe, the official shirt of the Colombian club.
America made an offer to the Argentine, but the contract was not made, an agreement between the parties could never be reached. Maradona was valued, he had already been world youth champion in Japan.
Other people assure that said meeting was held in one of the mansions of the American leaders in the Jardín neighborhood of Cali. Fernando Rodríguez Mondragón, son of Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela, warns about this in his book ‘The son of the chess player 2’.
It is said that Maradona was offered $500,000 a month tax-free to sign with America, but for some games, only months, but he said no. Then it was learned that he already had everything arranged to go to Barcelona.
