Chad Stahelski, director of the future live-action film dedicated to Ghost of Tsushima (PS4 and PS5 exclusive Sucker Punch game), he said he wants to “do it right”. Often the reception of video game adaptations on the big screen is not the best, but the team working on the film wants to change that.
“We just want to get it right,” he said Stahelski in an exclusive interview for IGN. “You know what can happen with video game adaptations. So we’re taking our time and doing it well. We’re working closely with the game’s developers to make sure we’re sticking to what’s beautiful about it.”
Stahelski added that the Ghost of Tsushima production team is still working on one film script and that fans of the game “would be very happy with what we’re working on”. He also said that playing Ghost of Tsushima “many times” was what drew him to the project.
Regarding the decisions of casting, Stahelski did not disclose any details. Asked if Daisuke Tsuje, the English voice actor of Jin Sakai, would reprise his role, Stahelski said “we’ll see. We haven’t gotten to that point yet.”
Stahelski is best known for directing all four of the current John Wick films, starring Keanu Reeves. Stahelski’s Hollywood career has largely focused on stunt execution and coordination, including Reeves’ stunt doubles in The Matrix, stunt coordination in Matrix Revolutions and Reloaded, and as a combat choreographer in 300.
The existence of a film based on Ghost of Tsushima was first shown in March 2021, along with news that Sucker Punch’s Peter Kang would serve as executive producer. The film is expected to adapt the story of Jin Sakai, who rises from defeat as the title Ghost, to free his home – the island of Tsushima – from Mongol invaders.
None exit date has been set and Stahelski, as mentioned, has confirmed that the production is still in the writing phase of the script: we do not believe we can expect concrete news for some time.
