Steven Gerrard is excited about the challenge of getting Aston Villa out of a succession of stumbles, as he prepares to lead the team during the Brighton Premier League match next Saturday.
Gerrard praised his predecessor Dean Smith, but did not underestimate the gravity of the task he will accept, at a time when the team is in 16th place after five consecutive defeats. Gerrard said in statements to the official website of his team: I love the challenge and the risks.
“I think this team suits me because the fans here are very excited and there is pressure to win, for me it’s about putting all the energy into doing exciting things here together.”
Gerrard added: “Dean Smith is someone I love and respect a lot, I can’t control the way things happen, but I think for the success he’s had and the respect he’s earned here he leaves a tough job for those behind him.”
He explained: “I think everyone here knows that I took over for a reason, the team has been in decline recently and my job is to analyze the squad because there is a lot of talent here.” Gerrard confirmed that there will be no mixed feelings, when he goes with his team to face his former club, Liverpool, at “Anfield” next month.
Gerrard, 41, is preparing for a wave of passion for the match, but he said: “I don’t think I and anyone else can control the noise that will happen, for me it is not important.”
He explained: “The important thing for me is to go to Anfield and win, to get points, and this is the mentality and the way we have to go for every game.”
He continued: “I want to win every game, my priority is focus and that’s all I will give Aston Villa on a daily basis.” Gerrard concluded his remarks by saying: “The only thing I can guarantee to the fans is that as long as I am in charge of the team, I will serve it with everything I have.”
