Is there a white Christmas in Germany? The weather changes significantly shortly before the festive season. It will be warm between north and south – but not dry.
Offenbach – It is the question of all questions in December in Germany. And year after year. And not just in this country. Is there a white Christmas? Can the presents be unwrapped under the Christmas tree while the frosty white outside shines in the glow of the lights? Is there a snowball fight right after the roast? Or a snowman? To be objective: At the moment there is not much to be said for it. Even more: It is now getting warm for the time being, nationwide.
Weather in Germany: White Christmas is now a long way off
Because: A high pressure area over southern France and Spain will allow extremely mild air to flow from the Mediterranean into Germany well into the coming week. Then with a view to the weather: subtropical air instead of snow, and that just before Christmas Eve and Christmas. Especially in the north-west of the country, according to the German Weather Service (DWD), temperatures will rise to around eleven degrees at the beginning of this week. In the Rhineland, even 13 degrees can be reached locally, according to the weather authority from Offenbach am Main.
“Frost only occurs at night, if at all, in the highest elevations,” explained one DWD-Meteorologist last weekend. The result: the snow has been retreating in many regions since Saturday, especially between Hesse, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. So in the south of the republic.

But: There is hardly any sunshine despite the very mild temperatures. “Warm does not mean dry,” said the meteorologist about possible precipitation. From Tuesday and Wednesday there should be rain again and again in the north and in the middle of Germany.
Weather in Germany: In mid-December it will be mild and rainy
But that’s not all with the “November weather” in December. From the middle of the week it forms loud DWD in the lower areas fog or high fog. There it remains correspondingly cloudy. After all: “The mountains, on the other hand, could definitely get many hours of sunshine,” explained the meteorologist from Offenbach in Hesse. So if you live in southern Bavaria, for example, you can at best plan a trip to the mountains for the end of the week or the weekend.
For example to the Zugspitze near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Or in the pre-Alps around the Tegernsee and Schliersee. Or to the Allgäu, also coming from Württemberg. Around white christmas with snow on the other hand, a real thriller develops. According to weather models that the meteorologist Jan Schenk for The Weather Channel explained (see video above), it could snow again for the first time on December 24th. At least in the extreme south and southeast of Germany. (pm)
