Germany intends to provide Ukraine with an “additional” Patriot air defense system, the German Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday.
“The German government has decided to further strengthen Ukrainian air defense” by sending “an additional Patriot system,” the Defense Ministry statement said.
She indicated that the transfer of this system will begin immediately.
The German Ministry of Defense explained that this shipment was provided “at the request of the Ukrainian government” and in coordination with its allies.
After the announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Germany, in a post on the “Telegram” application, in which he said, “I am grateful to Chancellor (German Olaf Scholz) for his decision to provide Ukraine with an additional Patriot air defense system and missiles” for the current systems.
He added that this represents “a true expression of support for Ukraine at a critical moment,” calling on his allies to “follow her example.”
This is the third Patriot system that Ukraine has received from Germany.
Later, during a telephone call with Zelensky, the German Chancellor affirmed his “firm solidarity with Ukraine,” according to a German government spokesman.
This announcement comes at a time when the Ukrainian army is facing field difficulties due to a lack of foreign military aid, troops and ammunition.
Germany is also a major contributor to military, financial and humanitarian aid to Ukraine since the start of the current crisis on 24 February 2022.
