“The extent and seriousness of the injuries is not yet known, the police said and added,” that there would be no further danger to the public.
Germany’s chancellor Olaf Scholz described the pictures taken in Mannheim as horrible.
“Violence is completely reprehensible in our democracy. The perpetrator must be severely punished,” Scholz wrote on the messaging service in X.
German Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser called for a thorough investigation into the attacker’s motive.
Several the media reported that among the wounded was a well-known far-right activist and blogger Michael Stürzenberger. He was due to speak in Mannheim on Friday at a rally organized by the anti-radical Islam group Pax Europa.
According to the police, five of those wounded in the attack were participants of the Pax Europa demonstration. The police officer who intervened in the situation was also hit with a knife several times in the back of the head.
According to Pax Europa, Stürzenberger suffered serious puncture wounds to his face and leg, while the police officer was reportedly stabbed in the back and neck.
Bavarian state security officials have classified Pax Europa as an Islamophobic group. The authorities have also accused Stürzenberger of Islamophobic statements.
