Germany decides on Thursday (2) additional restrictions against the virulent fourth wave of coronavirus, including closing bars and other public places, before examining a proposal for mandatory vaccination.
After a first session of negotiations on Tuesday, Chancellor Angela Merkel, her successor Olaf Scholz and the leaders of the country’s 16 regions meet again this Thursday to define the arsenal of measures.
Despite a timid improvement, the situation is still considered alarming in the country, with tens of thousands of daily infections and several hospitals close to collapse.
The context is complicated by the current transition period in Germany between the departure of Angela Merkel, who will deliver a farewell speech this Thursday, and the inauguration of Scholz, who is expected to be elected by parliament next week.
The meeting and the restrictions stimulated by the new government coalition should show, according to future chancellor Scholz, that “there is no power vacuum, as some cite at the moment”.
The most delicate point of the new offensive against covid is the mandatory vaccination, which can be decided from February or March.
The social democrat Scholz surprised by defending the radical measure, already approved in Austria and which is the object of debate in the European Union.
By the end of the year he must present a bill to Parliament.
Public opinion has changed considerably on the issue. A few months ago, two-thirds of Germans were against mandatory vaccines, but now 64% are in favor, according to a survey by RTL and NTV.
The measure has the support of the two coalition partners of the Social Democrats (the Greens and the Liberals, usually opposed to interference with liberties), as well as the conservatives of Angela Merkel.
Only the far-right AfD party has started a campaign against the mandatory vaccine.
