Government considers emergency package to manage gas supply in the country, in case there is a suspension of supply
German officials told the news agency “Reuters“ that the country is preparing for a possible gas cut by Russia. The government is studying an emergency package that could include the control of 3 companies considered fundamental.
The German Economy Ministry has been leading the studies for the package of measures. Chancellor Olaf Scholz had already stated that the country would be prepared for the suspension of Russian gas supplies.
In 2022, Russian gas accounted for 55% of Germany’s imports – as well as being essential for the production of automobiles, steel and plastic.
Germany is under pressure to stop buying gas from Russia because of the war in Ukraine. However, imports are expected to continue until 2024.
The German government released on March 30, 2022 an emergency plan to manage the country’s gas supply.
