The ‘Howitzer 2000’ is the most modern weapon of the Bundeswehr (German Army)
Seven self-propelled ‘Howitzer 2000’ artillery pieces arrived in Ukraine this week from Germany as part of the first delivery of heavy weapons since the Russian invasion began. Ukraine’s ambassador to Berlin Andriy Melnyk expressed the wish that “this was just an important initial step in strengthening the defense capabilities of our Army.” To do this, he asked the Berlin Executive to continue making new deliveries.
“The German defense industry is ready to produce a hundred new self-propelled howitzers for Ukraine in the short term. We hope that the chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and his Security Council will approve the corresponding request », he indicated.
The ‘Howitzer 2000’ is the most modern weapon of the Bundeswehr (German Army). It resembles a huge tank and can hit targets at a distance of forty kilometers.
kyiv Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov thanked his German counterpart Christine Lambrecht on Twitter for the shipment, while describing the delivery as “an example of international cooperation in support of Ukraine.”
Scholz’s government has come under fire in recent weeks, initially for hesitating to commit to heavy weaponry and later for its alleged slowness in handing over weapons. Berlin insisted that this was due to necessary changes in defense industry protocols and the need to ensure that Ukrainian soldiers were properly trained to use the weapons in question.
On the other hand, the German chancellor called for a ‘Marshall plan’ to help Ukraine recover from the war and called for progress on such an initiative at the next EU, G7 and NATO summits. Scholz pointed out before his Parliament that reconstruction is “a task of several generations” and proposed an aid formula like the one already used in the 20th century to relaunch post-war Europe.
