The Bundeswehr wiretapping affair is causing quite a stir – also in Russia. Dmitri Medvedev shares his conclusions and insults Olaf Scholz.
Moscow – Germany supports Ukraine in Russia's war of aggression. According to Chancellor Olaf Scholz, there should be no direct conflict with Moscow. No German soldiers should be sent to Ukraine. Dmitri Medvedev, however, sees Germany's plans differently, and the Taurus wiretapping affair plays a major role in this.
Medvedev on Germany: “Malicious lies”
After the publication of a wiretapped conversation between Bundeswehr officers about the Taurus cruise missile, the former Russian president accused Berlin of preparing for war with Moscow.
Attempts to portray the conversation between the Bundeswehr officers as a mere mental game about missiles and tanks are “malicious lies,” wrote the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council on Sunday (March 3) in the online Telegram service. “Germany is preparing for war with Russia.”
For Medvedev, the Taurus wiretapping affair is a sign of German war planning
The wiretapping affair began on Friday (March 1st). Since then, a recording lasting around 38 minutes has been circulating, in which a conversation between four German officers can be heard. The recording was distributed on Telegram by the editor-in-chief of the Russian state broadcaster RT, formerly known as Russia Today, Margarita Simonyan.
The conversation is about the possible use of German Taurus cruise missiles, which have a range of up to 500 kilometers, by Ukrainian armed forces and their possible effects.
Putin ally Medvedev calls Scholz a “liverwurst chancellor”
It is not clear whether the “political leadership” and Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) were informed about the officers’ conversations, wrote Russia’s ex-President Medvedev and insulted Scholz as a “liverwurst chancellor”. However, history knows many examples of militaries being able to “initiate or provoke” wars.
Medvedev was Russian President from 2008 to 2012 and then Prime Minister under Vladimir Putin until 2020. He is considered one of the loudest supporters of the offensive in Ukraine and repeatedly criticizes the West in inflammatory posts on online services. Most recently, he threatened the West with revenge because of the sanctions and mocked the German economy.
Pistorius calls for prudence in the Taurus affair
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) has called for prudence and unity in the Taurus affair. Nobody believes that the publication of the recording of a conversation between Bundeswehr officers about Taurus cruise missiles for Ukraine was a coincidence, Pistorius said on Sunday in Berlin. “This is clearly about undermining our unity. It’s about driving our domestic politics apart.”
Pistorius warned that German politicians should not make the mistake of falling for Putin. “It’s part of an information war that Putin is waging.” (cgsc with afp and dpa)
