German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz said on Sunday that there was “a consensus” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that weapons supplied by the West would not be used in attacks on Russian territory.
“There is a consensus on this point,” Scholz said in an interview with the weekly Bild am Sonntag.
Ukraine’s allies have taken further steps in military support after pledging to supply heavy tanks and longer-range rockets. Germany will deliver 14 Leopard 2 tanks from its Army inventory.
“German tanks are threatening us again,” Russian President Vladimir Putin had declared this week, comparing his military campaign in Ukraine to the war against Nazism.
“His words are a series of absurd historical comparisons that he uses to justify his attack on Ukraine,” Scholz told Bild. “However, nothing justifies this war,” he insisted.
“We carefully consider each arms delivery, in close coordination with our allies, starting with the United States. This common approach avoids an escalation of the war”, stressed the German Chancellor.
