One third are minors and three out of four adults are women.
Almost six months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, Germany is now officially hosting close to a million refugees from the occupied country. Only Poland, a direct neighbor of Ukraine, exceeds that figure within the European Union with more than 1.3 million people fleeing the war conflict in its territory. The Interior Ministry reported on Tuesday that Germany has so far officially registered 967,546 Ukrainians as refugees, although the number could be higher as many have not presented themselves to the authorities. Despite the registration, it is unknown how many of the nearly one million refugees are still on German soil or have traveled to other EU countries. The Federal Police pointed out, for its part, that an average of 700 new refugees from Ukraine arrive daily.
A third of those registered so far, exactly 351,061, are children or adolescents, practically all of whom are of school age, of whom 154,761 are enrolled in primary and secondary schools throughout the country. In addition, the report of the German Ministry of the Interior highlights that 97% of the refugees have Ukrainian nationality and that three quarters of them are women. Since martial law is in force in the invaded country, males between the ages of 18 and 60 are prohibited from traveling abroad. Since the beginning of the invasion at the end of February, more than 6.6 million people have left Ukraine, according to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The German Minister of the Interior, the Social Democrat Nancy Faeser, stressed in Berlin that this is the largest movement of refugees in the old continent since the Second World War. “I am very proud of the humanity and willingness to help shown by our country,” said the minister, who highlighted the expansion of integration courses and job offers for refugees from Ukraine. “Many in our society have grown up to help the runaways. It is a humanitarian effort that shows great solidarity with Ukraine,” Faeser said.
